Endocarditis is the infection of the heart. The functioning of the heart or valves may be impaired due to the infection. The dysfunction may pose serious risks for the patient. As a first step, the patient is prescribed antibiotics and other medication to improve the medical state.
In some cases, the infection continues, despite medical treatment, and leads to dysfunction in the cardiac valves and creating damage on the cardiac structure. In this case, surgery becomes inevitable.
Infection may also occur on the artificial valve, in patients who had undergone cardiac valve replacement operation in the past. Again, surgery is inevitable for these cases.
Endocarditis surgery is very risky. The success rate of the operation increases when the surgical team is specialized and experienced on this area.
